“Though bitter, good medicine cures illnesses. Though it may hurt, loyal criticism will have beneficial effects”  -Sima Qian

Criticizing does not necessarily mean that somebody is “trying to find faults”. But criticism is often anonymous with disapproval/dislike or objection. Understanding and dealing with criticism is a complex skill. It is very important to consider who makes the criticism, about what the criticism is made about and to whom its made about.

Difference between constructive and destructive criticism

There is a very thin line of difference between constructive and destructive criticism, and it is very important for every individual to understand and to react to this.

- Constructive Criticism always help in improving the individual- It does not have personal attacks- It is in an acceptable langauage(1)

Here are few checkpoints and guidelines on handling criticism:

  • Do not take it personal
  • Accept it if its genuine and valid
  • Accept constructive and avoid destructive criticism
  • Deal with criticism positively
  • Accept that you are not perfect too

Some people are born to criticize and make it a habit. Identify such people and avoid them. Try to be with people who offer you constructive criticism and are genuinely interested in your well-being.

“Sandwich every bit of criticism between two layers of praise” – Mary KY Ash
